ABOUT JAMES THORPE

JAMES ELDON THORPE, AKA UINTAH JIM, was born near the spectacular Uintah mountains of Northern Utah. As a boy, James and his brother, Don, lived in Southern Utah and they hiked the mountains and fished the streams near Puffer Lake in the Beaver mountains Which was very appropriate because Puffer Lake was founded by their great grandfather, James Moroe Puffer. Later the brothers moved to Salt Lake City and began hunting and fishing in the Uintah mountains..

It wasn't long until James became enchanted by the grandeur of the Uintah range of mountains near Salt Lake City. His youthful artistic senses were shaped by what he saw and felt. He was impressed by the colors of the high mountain country and he soon began painting canvas after canvas of the Uintah mountains.

James hiked, fished and painted the high Uintah Mountains for over haft a century. He was especially enthralled by the high mountain lakes and his paintings show his deep understanding and love for them. James was content to paint year after year without trying to commercialize his art. Many of his friends and family tried to get him to exhibit his paintings, but sadly, James passed away suddenly before that happened. His work is now on display on this website and available for purchase.
